SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Fresno State Diamond ’Dogs secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the nationally-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in a tightly contested game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game began as a pitchers’ duel, with both teams held scoreless through the first three innings. Fresno State starter Aidan Cremarosa displayed impressive command, working out of early trouble and keeping the Gauchos’ bats quiet.
The Bulldogs broke the deadlock in the top of the fourth inning. Lee Trevino led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and eventually scored on a clutch sacrifice fly by Bobby Blandford, giving Fresno State a 1-0 lead. The Gauchos responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game at 1-1 after a double and a single brought a run home.
Fresno State reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning. Eddie Saldivar drew a walk, moved into scoring position, and crossed the plate on Blandford’s two-out single, scoring the go-ahead run.
Cremarosa worked into the seventh inning, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out seven. Reliever Kaleb Hay took over with two outs in the seventh and was flawless, retiring all seven batters he faced to earn the save.
