Devastated dogs abandoned like “unwanted trash” after owner passed away

A trio of dogs have been abandoned in the most distressing of circumstances after their owner died.

Chrissy Elder, who runs Forgotten Now Family Rescue in Charlotte, North Carolina, took to her TikTok page, @chrissyrescuer, to share footage of the distressing scene that greeted animal control officers.

“Their owner passed away and, instead of the family giving them one shred of love or kindness, they just left them on the property like unwanted trash,” Elder told Newsweek. “The new owners moved in and found them there and called animal control.”

Elder said that, after their owner died, his family “were eager to just sell the land and didn’t want to care for the animals at all.”

That is what has led to these three dogs finding themselves facing an uncertain future. “These sweet souls are shattered over the loss of their owner and the loss of what they thought was the life they had,” Elder said.

Abandonment can have a lasting impact on a dog and their future prospects.

In 2007, a study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that, while adult dogs were able to form a strong affectional bond with new owners, they also struggled with anxiety and were often less securely bonded to their new human companion.

All three dogs were initially housed in an overcrowded rural shelter, but Elder has been able to get the yellow Labrador to another facility, while the two other dogs, who are bonded to each other and have been named Tom and Jerri, are in her care.

At the moment, it is clear that what they have been through has left an indelible mark. “They are so undersocialized that they aren’t even sure how to walk around humans,” Elder said. “They fall down in fear and are terrified. When you pet them, they are so unsure, they just hide their faces. It’s heartbreaking.”

Outside of the fact they were abandoned in the cruelest of fashions, little is known about any of the dogs rescued. What is clear is that it is going to take time for all of them to decompress and recover from their ordeal.

Elder has been able to secure a foster carer for the pups in the short-term, but in the long-term, all three are in need of forever homes. Elder said she believes it is more than that, though. After everything they have been through, these dogs need a “safe place” to gradually regain their trust in humans.

“They would do best in a quiet home that would allow this pair to heal and learn that humans can be kind,” Elder said.

If anyone out there believes they are capable of providing the kind of patient support these dogs so desperately need, Elder would love to hear from them.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
