A Detroit woman accused of stabbing and wounding a dog before fleeing the state is expected to be charged in court Thursday, officials said.
Jordan Love, 29, was scheduled to be arraigned after 10 a.m. in 36th District Court in Detroit, on a charge of second-degree killing/torturing an animal and abandoning/cruelty to four to 10 animals, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said.
If convicted, she faces up to seven years for the killing/torturing an animal charge and up to two years for the cruelty to four to 10 animals charge.
“The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has always taken the abuse of animals very seriously,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “We have impacted legislation and have been proactive with the applicable laws — seeking and fighting to change them in many instances.
“Although we never really anticipated the alleged brutality and cruelty that this case represents, as a result of our earlier efforts, this case is a clear representation of why better laws were needed,” she said.
Authorities allege Love stabbed her dog multiple times on Feb. 7.
Detroit Animal Control officers were called at about 2 p.m. on that day to a home in the 15200 block of Manning Street near Hayes Street and Seven Mile Road on the city’s east side for a report of a dog stabbing, according to officials.
They arrived, forced entry into the home, and found a canine with multiple stab wounds to its torso in the basement, investigators said. Officers also seized two other dogs and four cats from the home.
Police said the defendant allegedly posted a video of the injured dog on social media at about 1:30 a.m. on the same day. Detectives said she then fled Michigan.
Authorities located Love in Greenville, South Carolina, on March 20, the prosecutor’s office said. She was extradited to Michigan and escorted by detectives with the prosecutor’s office. She arrived in the state on March 9.
Love is the latest Michigan resident to be accused of abusing an animal.
Last month, three Flint residents were charged with killing/torturing animals and abandoning/cruelty to animals after authorities found a young boy as well as several dead and abused dogs inside a squalid home. They were also charged with child abuse.
In February, a Vienna Township man was charged with killing and torturing an animal after police found two abandoned dogs at his home. One of the dogs had to be euthanized.
Earlier in the month, a Manistee man accused of beating a puppy and fracturing its skull in Macomb Township was charged.
State officials have noted a rise in alleged animal abuse and cruelty cases in recent years.
