SAN ANTONIO – A deputy and two others are recovering after an owner and his girlfriend allegedly let a pack of dangerous dogs roam the streets.
At around 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, a deputy was called to the scene near the corner of Elm Forrest and Talley Road amid reports of over 20 dogs roaming a far West Side neighborhood uncontained.
When the deputy arrived, he exited his vehicle, only to be attacked by one of the dogs, being bitten multiple times in the leg and calf.
The dog that had attacked the deputy was found to have a wound consistent with that of a firearm projectile. The animal’s condition is currently unknown.
The deputy promptly discharged his firearm to stop the attack and quickly called for animal control. Deputies quickly made contact with and detained the dog’s owner.
The dog’s owner admitted to owning the animals and confirmed that none of the dogs had been vaccinated for rabies.
The owner received 17 citations for various violations, including a dangerous dog attack, dogs running free of restraint, and no rabies vaccination.
Both a friend of the owner and a separate female victim were transported for medical attention in separate attacks related to the roaming dog pack.
The owner’s girlfriend had failed to restrain the dogs or report the second bite to law enforcement. She was ultimately detained and cited.
Both the owner and his girlfriend have had charges filed against them with the city attorney’s office. A total of nine dogs were surrendered to Animal Control for quarantine.
