CALHOUN COUNTY, MI – Two dogs were rescued from a burning home by sheriff’s deputies rushing inside before fire crews arrived at the scene.
Fire and rescue crews were called at 5:13 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, to a home in the 22000 block of H Drive North in Marengo Township, east of Battle Creek, for a report of a fire, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
A passerby called 911 reporting seeing flames visible through a window and could hear dogs barking inside, police said.
Deputies were first to arrive and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. Two cars were parked in the driveway outside indicating the home might still be occupied, police said.
The deputies rushed inside the burning home to quickly search for anyone still inside. They didn’t find any people, though the deputies grabbed two dogs on the way out, police said.
Fire crews with the Marengo Township Fire Department arrived moments later and, after putting on protective gear, went inside the home to do a thorough search for occupants, finding none, police said.
No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office at 269-781-0880 or Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch at 269-781-0911. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Silent Observer at 269-781-9700.
