CANTON, Ohio (WJW) – Two people in Canton have been jailed on charges of animal cruelty after a police search of their home.
According to a police report, officers responded to the home on June 7 after a report from the Humane Society.
“Inside the residence were multiple dogs and cats malnourished,” the report states. “The inside of the residence was covered in feces and pee. There was also hundreds of flies and other bugs flying and crawling around inside,” it continued.
Multiple animals were found dead inside and outside of the home.
The police report detailed some animals had been dead so long, they had begun to liquify and seep into the ground.
In all, 7 animals were found deceased on the property, including 4 dogs and 3 cats.
16 animals were rescued.
The police report said the surviving animals were “severely malnourished.”
“You can see the rib cage of both animals, and one was struggling to stand up,” the police report said about two of the dogs.
Police arrested Cynthia and Ethan Schmidgall. They face 46 charges in connection with the case.
According to police, multiple neighbors told them that no one had been at the home for 3 to 4 weeks.
