ST. LOUIS (KMOV/Gray News) – Police are investigating a woman who died after she was mauled by dogs in her backyard.
According to St. Louis police, officers received a call for a shooting around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 5900 block of Theodore Avenue.
Officers said they were told that a woman was down and being attacked by dogs at that location.
Arriving officers found a severely injured 62-year-old woman and an injured 73-year-old man who were surrounded by three dogs that were barking at them in their backyard.
The man was fending off the dogs with a broom after firing a gun to try and distract them.
But officers said the woman was already heavily bleeding and they rushed her back into the home, applying tourniquets until EMS crews arrived.
The hearing-impaired woman was transported to an area hospital for treatment. However, she did not survive.

Police said the dogs took off once they arrived and were tracked down at a nearby home.
Animal control services were also called to the scene and took custody of three dogs.
Police did not immediately identify the people involved or announce any charges as the situation remains under investigation.
