A deaf rescue pit bull has gone from serving no purpose on the farm (other than causing mayhem), to now being one of the most important caregivers for baby animals who need extra attention.
After being thrown out of a car at 8 weeks old, Evie was rescued by Valley of the Sun Dog Rescue in Mesa, Arizona. She was originally taken as a foster by farm owner Allison Thomison, who decided to keep the pit bull permanently.
Evie is completely deaf, and it was difficult for her to provide much help. Thomison previously told Newsweek that she was “purely ornamental,” even sharing a video of Evie distracting other farm animals, including the cows and goats.
“I used to say that she served no purpose on the farm as she would dig holes in my garden, escape the fence to befriend the neighbor’s donkeys, swim in the cow water trough, and cause general happy havoc,” Thomison said.
But if there’s one thing that Evie has always been good at, it’s making friends.

She’s always been incredibly social, and now, she’s using that to her advantage. She has taken it upon herself to care for any sick or orphaned animals who need that little extra love and attention that only Evie can provide.
Thomison continued: “Evie is always caring for her baby goat, sheep, several cows, ducks, and chickens. She cleans them, follows them around, and keeps them safe. Many times, sick or orphaned animals just need some love, and Evie offers that. She will lay by a sick calf grooming it for hours, and she herds the babies into safety while keeping a sharp eye on her baby goat.”
Newsweek has previously reported on Evie’s precious bond with Branch, the orphaned goat. As it turns out, she isn’t just maternal over Branch, but any helpless animal she encounters.
Thomison, who is the current Mrs. Cochise County 2025 in Arizona, says that adopting smaller animals in need of care is Evie’s “favorite thing,” and it’s her most important role.
The farm owner loves sharing videos of Evie on TikTok (@farmofmilkandhoney) and documenting how far she’s come. A video, posted on March 28, explained how Evie always wanted to be helpful but being deaf often held her back. But then she finally found her duty by caring for others.
The adorable clip went viral with over 149,800 views and 21,100 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.
By sharing Evie’s development, Thomison hopes to shine a light on the amazing things that deaf dogs are capable of.
She told Newsweek: “Evie has never changed, she’s been the same loving dog since we brought her home. She sees the world completely differently to everyone else, and it’s beautiful.”
Evie has done several weeks of training to help her learn specific hand signs, and she can now recognize 11 American Sign Language signals.
Internet users can’t get enough of the sweet role that Evie has carved out for herself on the farm. Since the clip went viral, it has amassed over 400 comments on TikTok so far.
One comment reads: “Nanny dog just nanny-ing her way around.”
Another person wrote: “yes, it is great job she does, I’d say she is the backbone.”
While another TikTok user added: “I think her job is to love everyone, in the perfect way that she does.”
