RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Thousands of people made their way to Deadwood Saturday for Oktoberfest, but the event to be at was the 17th annual Wiener Dog Race.
More than 70 wiener dogs participated in the costume contest and race.
“We’re excited to race, he’s wearing his little Oktoberfest outfit. He’s ready to beat all the other Wiens. I’m a little nervous because he’s a little scared sometimes. He’s a little timid but hopefully, he makes it,” said KOTA’s own Juliana Alford, owner of Beans, a first-time racer.
Returners like Gus were excited to take second place for the second year in a row.
“This is his third race. I don’t do any prepping he actually has separation anxiety so he just wants me, so he’ll run to me,” said Kimberly Hinders.
Event officials say people travel all over the country for the race, like Bodhi and his owner Darryl who traveled from Texas and plan to return next year.
“It needs to be a little louder. He’s a male and there were a couple of females in the race and I think that played against us. We’ll be back bigger and better,” said Darryl Swanson.
