SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Months ago, a rare fungal infection for dogs took the life of Marisa Villar’s beloved Millie , recently… Marisa’s two other dogs were diagnosed with the same illness.
The disease is called pythosis and it is a rare fungal infection caused by the aquatic mold pythium Insidiosum. The disease is rare, some suncoast veterinarians haven’t treated it yet.. Dr. Steven Pepper from the fruitville animal clinic has, he tells us it is caused by a specific kind of water, and the illness is very tricky to diagnose and to treat.
“Well, if it’s really hot and humid you want to keep them out of standing water like in a pond, or in grass that has standing water, that been baking in the sun for a period of time. That’s where the organisms really thrive. It’s a tricky disease to diagnose you have to do specific tests sometimes to track it down.”
