Two men face animal cruelty charges after authorities searched a home in Ansonia last week found multiple dogs who were emaciated and in need of medical care, including one that was dead and two that had to be euthanized.
Police officers and detectives were searching the Condon Drive residence in connection with an unrelated investigation when the neglected animals were found, according to the Ansonia Police Department.
Police said several dogs were taken to an emergency animal clinic after authorities determined they were in “urgent need” of medical attention.
One dog in the home was already dead, according to police. A necropsy will look to determine the cause of death.
A total of 11 dogs and three cats were seized from the residence. Two of the dogs suffering from “extreme medical conditions” were euthanized “despite efforts to save them,” according to police. Several other dogs are still receiving treatment.
Two residents of the home were charged in connection with the animals.
Javon Coverson, 30, faces eight counts of cruelty to animals and seven counts each of failure to comply with dog ownership requirements and failure to comply with rabies control ordinances. He posted $10,000 bond following his arrest and is scheduled to be arraigned on June 20 in Derby Superior Court.
Assante Coverson, 26, faces one count each of cruelty to animals, failure to comply with dog ownership requirements and failure to comply with rabies control ordinances. He posted $1,000 bond and is expected to face a judge on Friday.
Police said their investigation into the animal cruelty allegations remains ongoing and may lead to additional arrests.
