DAYTON — The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center is ‘critically over capacity’ and is in urgent need of adopters, fosters and rescues to help place several dogs.

The shelter is designed to safely house 80 dogs. Currently, the shelter is holding 108.
“We are often over 80. At this point, we are critically over 80, which is why we sent out the urgent need. Unfortunately, we are very rarely under our capacity,” Amy Bohardt, director of the Montgomery County ARC told News Center 7’s Amber Jenkins Tuesday.

The overcapacity issue has become such a burden on the center that only animals that come with an order from a judge or magistrate will be impounded, an ARC spokesperson said in a social media post earlier this week.
“We have to limit our intake because this is a very critical issue that affects the safety of the dogs and our staff at the shelter,” Bohardt said.
The shelter is still offering lost and found services, supplies to finders and owners, and will still scan pets for microchips.
In the last week, there were 17 dogs adopted which helps to free up space in the shelter, Bohardt said.
“I’ll say on average, we’re adopting out at least a dozen or more every single week. Obviously, we’d love to see that double. That would make a huge difference if we could see two dozen dogs adopted every week,” Bohardt said.
The center, located at 6790 Webster Street in Dayton, is still seeking people to adopt and foster. More information on the process and services available can be found here.
