The incident occurred on Knights Pond on Monday. The people escaped the water unassisted, but the dogs needed rescuing.
CUMBERLAND, Maine — Three people and two dogs were rescued after falling through the ice in Cumberland on Monday afternoon.
At 4:00 p.m., the Cumberland Fire Department, Cumberland Police Department, and the North Yarmouth Fire Rescue Department were dispatched to Knights Pond off Greely Road, according to a social media post from the Cumberland Fire Department.
When crews arrived they determined the three people who had fallen through were able to self-extricate from the water, but first responders had to enter the water to rescue the two dogs, the post stated.
At the scene, residents reported to crews this was the second instance of someone breaking through the ice in one day. Residents said they witnessed someone break through the ice earlier that day but were able to self-rescue.
“Public Safety Officials are strongly encouraging people to stay off the ice. Weather conditions have not been favorable for safe ice,” the post stated. “Thankfully these incidents have had positive outcomes, however breaking through the ice into frigid waters are extremely dangerous situations and often result in severe injuries or death.”
Fire officials said this incident occurred just days after crews completed ice water rescue training to brush up on their skills for the winter.
Any further questions regarding this incident can be directed to Fire Chief Dan Small.
