Dogs and cats are often portrayed as mortal enemies by popular culture, but the truth is that when socialized properly, they can become best of friends.
The owner of two dogs called Stephen and Yan has melted hearts on social media after revealing that because of her dog-like behavior, the calico cat they just adopted was immediately accepted into the pack.
A viral post shared on Reddit earlier this month, under the username Lov_Shawarma, shows the cat, Kiwi, playing with both dogs in the bathtub, playing hide-and-seek with their owner.
“When we adopted cat we didn’t expect she will became our third dog (they all love each other),” a caption explains.
The poster, Alex, told Newsweek that from the very first day Kiwi came to live with them, she started to copy the behavior of their dogs and understood that they were getting treats after executing commands.
“As she’s pretty smart she started to do simple commands like ‘sit’, ‘give me your paw’ and ‘come’ (she knows her name quite well). However, she’s still a cat, so she won’t do the command if she’s not interested or wants to do something else.”
Kiwi and the pups play together with toys, sleep together and also takes baths together after going on their daily walks.
“Most of the time Kiwi plays with Stephan (the corgi)—he treats her like a sister and plays with her most of the time. As for Yan—he’s too big for her. But she’s trying to get his attention by playing with his tail (and that can annoy him as well but he’s not aggressive at all).
“They also share the same bowls of food and water (she has her own cat food but prefers to eat from the boys’ bowls).
“In the near future I’m going to start taking Kiwi out for walks with Stephan as she’s quite active and I think she’ll be happy to play in the park. Of course I will keep her away from the other dogs in our community, although she can stand up for herself.”
Even though they may fight sometimes, dogs and cats can live together and become best of friends, according to an Italian study published in the journal PLOS ONE.
The study of responses from more than 1,200 owners of dogs and cats determined that over 64 percent of the different pets living together also played together; 58 percent chased each other; and 41 percent fought. Almost two-thirds of the pets sometimes playfully “ambushed” the other.
The video quickly went viral on social media, garnering viewers from across Reddit. It has so far received over 64,000 upvotes and 478 comments on the platform.
One user, Wide_Ordinary4078, commented: “Lol I didn’t even notice the cat until I read the ‘3rd dog’ part lol.”
