SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A San Francisco couple has been cited after their dog attacked a child in May, the San Francisco Police Department said. The child was hospitalized after the attack, but their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
The victim’s family filed a police report at about 4 p.m. on May 23, alleging that the attack happened the day before just after 5 p.m. The child was walking with a caretaker on the 2700 block of Lombard Street when the dog attacked, police said.
The people handling the dog did not exchange information with the victim at the time of the attack, SFPD said.
A woman who claims to be the mother of the victim told KRON4 that the dog in question is a white husky mix. It pinned her son to the ground and bit his left arm, she said.
The dog owners claimed they did not speak English and declined to say whether the dog was vaccinated, the woman said. The boy received five stitches and had to take several vaccine shots.
The victim is now terrified of dogs, his mother said.
SFPD’s Vicious and Dangerous Dog Unit located the dog and its owners, who live in San Francisco. They were cited for failure to provide information after a dog bite and failure to report a dog bite. According to the police, there will be a hearing to decide what is next in this case.
SFPD’s Vicious and Dangerous Dog Unit investigates 600-800 dog bites per year.
