Corn Dog Day is a cause for celebration on Nob Hill
Rich Bartel’s Clowndog Parlor has hot dogs for any occasion
At the Clowndog Hot Dog Parlor, every day is a hot dog day. But since 1992, the corn dog has a day all its own.Rich Bartel, owner of the Clowndog Hot Dog Parlor, is more than happy to celebrate an occasion that boosts business at his Nob Hill restaurant on Central Avenue SE. Friday was especially good because National Corn Dog Day has had a strong basketball connection since its inception. When properly spent, NCDD combines not only the day’s namesake but also tater tots, American beer and the first day of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a corn dog of your own liking any time at all.In New Mexico, putting red or green chile on your corn dog is not uncommon, Bertel says, but there is no wrong way to consume one. At his parlor, you can get your corn dog dipped in pineapple chunks, shredded coconut, Fruit Loops and Spaghetti O’s.”One thing that’s special is, our corn dogs are gluten-free,” Bartel said, “but you can’t tell they’re different than conventional corn dogs.” The only downside to this year’s NCDD celebration at the Clowndog was the UNM Lobos men’s basketball team’s loss Friday night to Boise State in the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament, but technically, it was National Corn Dog Day Eve anyway. A corn dog, tater tots and a cold American beer were more than enough to ease the pain.
