CALUMET, Mich. (WLUC) – The organizers of the Copper Dog 150 are preparing for the ‘kick-off’ of the event’s season, its annual free dog sled rides for kids.
The rides are held at Agassiz Park in Calumet. Because of warmer weather last year, the rides were delayed until January. Tom Bauer of the Otter River Sled Dog Training Center and Wilderness Adventures will be giving rides. The Michigan Tech University Mushing Club will also be there to help out.
While the kids enjoy rides, parents and other attendees can enjoy free hot dogs, hot cocoa, and coffee.
“You get to be up close and fun with the dogs, and you get to sit in a basket and go for a ride with Tom Bauer,” CopperDog 150 Volunteer Director and Musher Liaison Krissy Tepsa said. “I mean, what more fun could that be?”.
The rides will be held on Saturday from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Tepsa also wants people to start thinking about volunteering for the main event starting in February.
“Hoping to have a volunteer registration site opened up sometime in the beginning of January,” Tepsa continued. “We’ll need our fence set-up and tear-down folks for 5th Street, we’ll need lots of crossing guards to help those teams and mushers get across all of our road crossings safely…there’s a little bit for everyone.”
