COOS BAY, Ore. – The only official animal shelter in Coos County is not taking in any more dogs or cats while shelter workers strive to get the shelter back under capacity, Coos County deputies said.
According to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, an animal control officer recently alerted local law enforcement agencies that the Coos County Animal Shelter has been operating above capacity, and cannot accept any more dogs or cats. CCSO officials said the Coos County Animal Shelter is the only shelter in the county, and currently houses more than 30 dogs and 80 cats as of July 18.
The CCSO said the Coos County Animal Shelter is a “no kill” shelter, meaning it only euthanizes animals who have absolutely no other option available to them. The CCSO said it is the shelter’s hope and desire to adopt all animals under its care to safe and happy homes, so they have stopped taking in new animals for a while until they are back under capacity.
According to the CCSO, before the shelter exceeded capacity, it was taking in three dogs for every one dog adopted. The CCSO said shelter staff are working diligently to get every animal to their forever homes, and asked for patience from the community.
