An animal shelter recently shared the heart-rending moment two labradoodles were abandoned by their owner.
Mercy Full Project (@mercyfullproject) based in Tampa, Florida, was there to pick up the pieces when the confused dogs were left at their gates.
“The sad reality of surrendering your pups to an animal rescue. Both babies are together with a foster & need to be adopted as a pair. They’re 2-year-old Labradoodles and the SWEETEST pups,” the shelter explained on TikTok. The video quickly went viral, amassing 70,200 likes and 1.3 million views.
The poignant footage shows the two dogs at the shelter gate, wagging their tails innocently. As they attempt to follow the departing car, they start to cry. “They are so confused,” the shelter wrote in an onscreen caption.
“The most heartbreaking moment …” reads the text overlay as the pups watch their owner drive away. A shelter worker then tries to comfort the distressed animals.

Fortunately, these playful pups have since found a new forever home. “They are doing great at their new forever home. They are under 2 years old, extremely playful, and happy dogs,” the shelter informed Newsweek.
In the United States, many pets face a similar fate. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 3.1 million dogs enter animal shelters each year, with 2 million being adopted.
The situation is dire in Florida, where local shelters are overwhelmed. For example, the Tampa Bay Humane Society recently had to close dog intakes from June 26 to July 12 due to an outbreak of canine influenza. They were forced to close their doors to surrendered dogs for the first time in 112 years in an attempt to control the outbreak and protect the more than 200 dogs in their care.
Viewers were deeply moved by the scene and expressed their disbelief and sadness in the comments.
“How do they drive away? It kills me when I go to the store and my dog whines through the window at me,” one user wrote. “You have to have no soul to surrender a dog,” added another, named Coco.
“My heart just broke in a million pieces. I pray they find a loving forever home,” said another viewer.
One commenter noted: “It’s really sad that the person filming probably was more sad than the person surrendering. Poor babies! Hopefully, they find a home full of love where they can remain together! Please, God, make it so.”
The shelter added: “People need to be more responsible when obtaining a pet, they are a lifetime commitment.”
