MENDOCINO CO., 5/1/25 — Do you wonder if your tax dollars are spent wisely? How are schools functioning? Why does your local water district seem to always be on the ropes?
These are some of the questions that Mendocino County grand jurors examine. In response to citizen complaints or concerns of the jurors themselves, those serving on the 19-member grand jury interview county and special district employees, citizens, examine financials and issue a written report that determines local agencies’ successes and problems and makes suggestions of how to address shortfalls.
Reports from the last two years have included reviews of Mendocino County Human Resources, Mendocino County Family and Children’s Services, Ukiah Unified School District’s Special Education Program, Mendocino County Jail, and many other agencies.
If you have ever wanted to contribute to democracy, serving on a grand jury is a vital service to yourself and to the community at large. You can provide oversight to our government to ensure its functions are transparent, responsive to citizens, and efficient.
Jurors typically spend about 10-20 hours per week examining the issues assigned to them. Jurors serve a one-year term but can reapply. Applicants must be US citizens, 18 or over, live in Mendocino County, and be fluent in English, as reports and interviews are given orally and in writing.
