TROY, Ala. (WTVY) – Before Francine made landfall on Thursday, people throughout the Wiregrass area were preparing, including the Troy Animal Rescue Project.
Rescue director Tiffany Howington knows from experience how important bracing is in the case of weather.
She shared an experience from the past that she will never forget.
“We were hit by a tornado a year-and-a-half ago and it unfortunately killed one of our dogs and injured another,” Howington recalled.
Tiffany knew the risk in our area was not as severe as others in the southeast, however, T.A.R.P. asked the public for help with temporary foster homes.
“When it comes to weather, we try to be better safe than sorry. When we started putting it out on Facebook, we had a tremendous response,” the T.A.R.P. founder recalled.
Over 20 people showed up Wednesday to take these dogs into their homes.
The dogs otherwise would have stayed in kennels exposed to the heavy rain.
“We started around 7 a.m. yesterday and the last person picked their dog up around 6 p.m. To see that many people love the animals and want to help them, it has been amazing,” Howington said.
Tiffany believes this nice gesture from the community goes beyond just a cozy home for the dogs to stay in temporarily.
“For them to get a break from shelter life, to be able to go down into a home for people to love on them, lay on the couch, or in the bed, it is great for the dogs,” She said.
Tiffany says the foster homes have loved the experience so far. In fact, some are reporting to be “foster fails.” That is when a foster family decides to officially adopt that pet.
Some families have also asked to foster the dogs past tomorrow.
All the dogs shown are still available for adoption as of Thursday, September 12.
