JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Thanks to a bunch of strangers online, a Jackson pup will walk on all four of her legs.
On Monday, Feb. 3, the Jackson County Animal Shelter received two surrendered dogs, a mother and daughter, after they were found wandering the streets. The mother was soon adopted, but the daughter, named Soopr Grl, suffered a broken leg, Animal Shelter Director Lydia Sattler said.
The shelter planned to amputate the leg, but after sharing Soopr Grl’s story on the shelter’s Facebook page, people asked how they could help.
“We have to be really careful about the dollars that we spend to make sure we’re using it wisely and to spread it out across as many animals as we can,” Sattler said. “If enough people really want to donate to help her, we’re more than happy to see if it’s an option for her to keep her leg.”
The Michigan State University Orthopedic Surgery Department estimated the cost to fix her leg at roughly $6,000. Within hours of informing people on Facebook, the shelter raised the funds Feb. 5 from community donors and an anonymous donor who matched $3,000, Sattler said.
Sattler was in awe people were willing to donate for Soopr Grl. “There (are) people who will come and work together to do something good,” Sattler said. “It’s amazing there (are) not all bad things in the world.”
Soopr Grl received her surgery from MSU on Monday, Feb. 10. The surgery was a success, and she was discharged the next day.
“She’s toe-tapping a little bit, she’s not fully walking, but she’s got to do physical therapy.” Sattler said.
Sattler is fostering Soopr Grl as she recovers. After about eight weeks, the 1 1/2-year-old pit bull-beagle mix will be available for adoption.
Sattler still can’t believe the overwhelming response on social media. Each Facebook post about Soopr Grl has received around 1,000 likes, and hundreds of comments.
The shelter was able to go above and beyond for its animals thanks to Jackson County. In the future, staff will not be afraid to ask for support.
“To be able to have all four of her legs, what a life-changing difference that’s going to be for her,” Sattler said. “I feel inspired by the kindness and generosity of the people in the community that would do such a nice thing for this ‘Soopr Grl.’”
