PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (KCTV) – A baby remains in critical condition after being bitten by a pit bull Thursday evening.
Neighbors were shocked by the news, as West 72nd Terrace and the neighborhood around is friendly, with many families walking their dogs today.
“I hope that the child recovers and has a full recovery and gets better soon,” neighbor Alison Head said.
Prairie Village Police said the infant is at Children’s Mercy Hospital, and the baby’s status remains the same, after providing a similar update on Friday.
The dog was put down after the attack and is not on the loose. The owner is cooperating with the investigation.
“Having them in a position where they can get to someone like the bicyclist or the baby is criminal, period,” Sam Tucker said. “End of story.”
Tucker is referencing an earlier incident from last year where a pack of 7 dogs killed a man who was riding his bicycle.
He believes the pit bull ban that was in place prior to February 2020 shouldn’t have been overturned.
“There’s no good reason for pit bulls to be around anymore,” Tucker said.
Advocates at the time of the change, which was approved by the city council, 9-2, argued there isn’t evidence that a breed makes a dog dangerous – that their behavior is impacted more by how they are raised and trained.
