BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WBNG) — More than 200 dogs from several Midwest commercial breeding facilities have been transported to shelters to find their forever homes.
Here in the Southern Tier, 21 of those dogs have made their way to the Broome County Humane Society.
“Commercial dog breeding facilities are large-scale breeders, and whether it is a puppy mill or a commercial breeder, there are varying levels of neglect,” Director of Field Operations for Bissell Pet Foundation Kim Alboum told 12 News. “If you have 200 dogs on a property, you can’t tell me that you can individually care for each one of those.”
Before finding their families, Shelter Manager Amberly Ondria wants to remind the community to research the dogs that come from these breeding facilities.
“These dogs have not spent a lot of time outside, they don’t walk on leashes, house breaking will need to be a priority,” Ondria said.
According to Alboum, varying levels of neglect can create a dog that may be shut down or extremely shy. It is essential to know how to take care of them and being patient is key for their success.
The dogs are now available to visit at the Broome County Humane Society.
The Bissell Pet Foundation suggests doing your research if you decide to purchase a pet from a breeder rather than a shelter. Avoid places with hundreds of dogs on the property, and always visit the breeder in person before making a decision.
The Humane Society is currently transitioning to a digital platform and asks for your patience this week as they implement the significant change.
