NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. — Pretty soon, the pitter patter of 88 paws will be the soundtrack of New Hartford’s new dog shelter, on Oneida Street, in Washington Mills. But not by February 1st, as New Hartford Town Supervisor, Paul Miscione, had hoped.
“I’m hopin’ by the middle of this month, in February coming, so I’m hopin’ by February 15th we should have them in and at least get it ready so we can start using it,” said Miscione.
They’re still waiting for crates.
“So once those are in, we can put those in and start painting and finishing up the loose ends,” said Miscione.
The town’s full-time animal control officer will run the shelter, which the town supervisor hopes will also eventually become a revenue source.
“In the future, bring other municipalities on board, so at least it’s a break even or it’s a moneymaker.”
Miscione is talking with interested municipalities. The shelter has room for 22 dogs, and room to expand for another 22, in the back. And for the rare strays who aren’t reunited with their families…
“We’re looking at making it an adoption agency in the future. Most New Hartford dogs are found and then their owners come to get them, but if they’re not, we will use this as an adoption shelter, also,” said Miscione.
And the plan is for the shelter to serve more than just dogs.
“It’s an animal shelter, but i wanted to encompass a whole humane society you know, bring teaching events in here for the students and stuff, working with the local vets and everything,” said Miscione.
