PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. – Colorado authorities have arrested and charged a woman in the death of her mother, who suffered from dementia, in a fatal dog attack.
The Pueblo County Sheriff’s office said 47-year-old Jessica Hoff owned the dogs.
Hoff was charged with criminal negligence resulting in the death of an at-risk adult and 54 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals death.
The backstory:
Authorities said the incident happened in February at a Colorado City home belonging to the mother and daughter.
Deputies responded to the home on the 4800 block of Jefferson Blvd to the report of an unconscious woman.
When they arrived, they found LaVonne Hoff, 76, unresponsive and found several dogs running around the home and nearly two dozen dogs and seven birds in cages in the home.
The mother was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy report said her death was attributed to the dog attack.

An investigation revealed that the mother was left alone while the dogs were running loose in the home.
The daughter reportedly left her mother to run errands despite the fact her mother suffered from dementia and needed 24-hour care.
They conducted a search warrant on the home and a second property owned by the daughter and found a total of 54 dogs and seven birds in her possession. The animals were found to be living in unsanitary conditions and several of the dogs were in poor health.

The daughter was booked into the Pueblo County Jail.
Deputies seized the animals.
