Colorado Springs shelter takes in Kentucky dogs after storm

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – More than a month after a storm took the roof off a Kentucky animal shelter, some relocated dogs have arrived at the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

These dogs will be available for adoption, too.

“Unfortunately, at the beginning of April, there was a storm that affected the Hopkins County Animal Shelter where it ripped the roof off of the building,” said Cody Costra with HSPPR. “So, luckily we were able to help out and bring some of those dogs here to HSPPR to help them find their new homes.”

As of Tuesday, one dog, Nutmeg, was available for adoption. She was one of four brought to the HSPPR shelter in Colorado Springs.

“I’m shy; a quiet home would be ideal for me,” read the description on her kennel, “and may be nervous when handled, please let me come to you first.”

Costra said the animals had been through an ordeal, being evacuated from their original shelter and traveling across the country.

“We know that natural disasters have a profound effect on people but they do have a profound effect on pets as well, so we are really grateful that we are able to be helpful in the situation like this,” he said.

And he said Colorado is an ideal new home for these dogs. The decision to move them was made by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, with many of the animals displaced by the storms in early April being moved to new homes across the country. In Colorado, they were moved to two shelters.

Costra said Colorado is a very pet-friendly state with many people looking to adopt a new furry family member, making their shelters an ideal new location to help these dogs find homes. But, more so, he said it means a lot to him to be able to help.

“We love being able to see these pets find their new homes and when we get those pictures that come in with a new family that is happy and the dog is happy to see them as well that’s really the feeling that makes working it animal welfare really worth it,” Costra said.

At time of writing, Nutmeg was the only dog available for adoption as the other three go through evaluation. You can find more here.

The Favicon for the website, dogsandpurses(dot)com, features an all-black background with a minimalist line drawing of a puppy's head poking out of a stylish purse. The puppy's head is drawn with a cute and friendly expression, making it the focal point of the design. The purse, which the puppy is emerging from, is depicted with clean, elegant lines. The contrast between the black background and the white line drawing creates a striking and modern look for the Favicon.
