A new ordinance has been passed in the city of Northglenn, set to limit the number of dogs and cats in a household to four.
The ordinance was initially introduced after concerns were expressed over excessive noise and waste caused by the high number of pets kept by some residents of the area. The limit on number of pets per household tends to fall on each municipality, with Northglenn previously being the only city in Adams County without a limit. The limit of four pets (dogs and cats) is fairly standard compared to similar rules found around the United States. Colorado Springs allows four dogs or cats on the premise, while Denver allows a combination of five animals, but not more than three dogs.
Those caught breaking the new Northglenn rule could receive a court order requiring pet removal.
The limit will go into effect on August 1, limiting each residential dwelling unit to four dogs, four cats, or a combination of four animals total (two cats and two dogs, for example).
There is, however, some good news for those in Northglenn who currently own more than four cats and dogs. A ‘previously owned pet exception’ is being offered as an exemption, but it means disclosing the animals to the city by August 1. Find the exemption form here.
