One of the country’s ‘best campgrounds for camping with dogs’ is located in Colorado, according to popular camping resource The Dyrt – but is that really much of a surprise? After all, Colorado is one of the most dog-friendly states around.
According to a report on the topic from The Dyrt, 53.7 percent of campers had a dog with them in 2023.
“People love camping for a lot of the same reasons that dogs love camping,” said Sarah Smith, founder of The Dyrt. “You get out of the house, immerse yourself in nature, explore, see some wildlife, sit by a fire, sleep in the great outdoors. When we take Brandy (aka The Dyrt Dog) camping with us, I know she’s having as much fun as we are.”
In order to determine which campgrounds around the US were the best for camping with dogs, The Dyrt utilized AI to analyze millions of user-generated reviews, pinning down which campgrounds were the most “dog-welcoming.”
The top-ranking dog-friendly campground nationwide ended up being 4 Paws Kingdom Campground and Dog Retreat – a spot in North Carolina described as “doggy heaven on Earth.” Said to be the ‘first dog-dedicated campground in the country,’ this campground features a doggy bathhouse and grooming station, a swimming pond, an agility park, and multiple dog parks. Some of the campsites also come with enclosed yards to help keep pups contained.
The Colorado campground that ranked among the most dog-friendly nationwide doesn’t go quite as far to make sure canines enjoy their experience, but it does offer plenty of natural space to explore.
Chatfield State Park, located in the Denver metro area, ended up ranking 7th on the nationwide list.
With a wide variety of camping options and a massive 69-acres of fenced-in off-leash dog park space, there’s plenty of room for pet owners to have fun at Chatfield, with the off-leash space also including two ponds and miles of trails.
The campground here is open year-round, with a high 4.5 of 5-star rating on The Dyrt.
In total, Chatfield State Park includes more than 5,500 acres of nature preserve and recreation area, with the centerpiece of the space being Chatfield Reservoir.
