In celebration of Memorial Day and Mental Health Awareness Month, Retired Sergeant Major Bob Lighty and his Service Dog, TieRod, from Middletown, Pa. presented to the Reach Out Mentoring Group about the life changing impact a Service Dog can provide to an individual with a disability.
Sergeant Major Lighty talked about his time deployed, his retirement, mental health awareness and how TieRod helps him. Sergeant Major Lightly and TieRod were matched through the Susquehanna Service Dogs (SDD) Program, located in Grantville, Pa.
Service Dogs are trained to perform tasks that benefit those with disabilities. These tasks can include opening doors, pushing buttons, balancing, walking and transferring from place to place. Some Service Dogs can help with medical alerts, diabetes, panic attacks, anxiety, calming those with PTSD, heart conditions, seizures and many more. If interested in learning more, go to the Susquehanna Service Dogs’ website where you can donate, volunteer to be a puppy raiser or apply for a Service Dog, if needed.
Both the Susquehanna Service Dogs Program and the Clinton County Reach Out Mentoring Program rely on volunteers, community support, donations, and awareness to provide positive impacts in the community. Volunteers especially play a critical role in assisting both programs with their time, support and service.
