MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Memphis Animal Services (MAS) needs help getting adoptable dogs out of the shelter.
According to a plea posted to the agency’s Facebook, the city shelter is currently over capacity by about 100 canines.
MAS says 78 dogs have come in since Friday.
Three of those dogs were returned, 24 were brought in by caring citizens, and animal control rescued 51 from the streets.
MAS’ website lists 288 dogs available for adoption in total. 77 of those dogs are currently in a foster home.
Last month, MAS released a similar plea to the public regarding the shelter’s critical dog population.
Action News 5 went inside the shelter where we found some kennels stuffed with two or three dogs instead of one.
The agency’s interim director Mary Claire Borys said staff have been working the phones with rescue groups and other entities to try to get the dogs rehoused.
She also said overcrowded shelters are a trend across the country—she pointed to tough economic times as a primary reason.
Memphis Animal Services is open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from noon until 4 p.m.
The facility is located at 2350 Appling City Cove.
