UTICA, N.Y. — The City of Utica is working with an animal rescue group.
This is in addition to Wanderer’s Rest.
But this group isn’t a kennel. They, themselves, don’t house dogs.
“We’re a group of people that have a ton of experience in the animal welfare industry, and we’re strictly foster home based, so we do not have a facility. All of the dogs that we pull, all of the dogs that we help, go straight into someone’s house,” said Rover’s Do Over Founder Chelsea Williamson.
Rover’s Do Over placed Utica stray, Pepper, with her foster family. They already have two dogs and three kids, so fostering was perfect.
“This is the way to fill that void without having a permanent dog in our home, so we get to love a new dog, experience a new dog, train a new dog, do all those things that we love to do as a family,” said foster mom, Jennifer Dodge.
“Rover’s Do Over is not a kennel service, but they are a service that finds fostering for animals while they’re waiting for adoption,” said Utica Mayor Mike Galime. “So they’re just another piece of the puzzle.”
The City of Utica has six kennels reserved at Wanderer’s Rest in Canastota, with another two optional.
“So, we will be taking care of the overflow dogs, so when the dogs come in, or they’re found stray they spend their 24-hour hold at the city, and if there’s room at Wanderer’s, they’ll then move to there to finish out the remainder of their stray hold. And if Wanderer’s is full, that’s where we come into play,” said Williamson.
And they do it for free. The city pays for vet care for the animals they place, and Rover’s Do Over takes care of the food. There’s no cost to foster families.
