City Animal Services opened dog intake, effective Wednesday, for San Angelo residents to improve public safety and reduce the number of stray dogs on the streets, a city media release said Thursday.
In addition, officials sought to quell an unfounded rumor related to the number of dogs euthanized by the city on Wednesday, according to the media release.
“The City would like to address a recent social media rumor stating that the shelter euthanized 45 dogs yesterday, Feb. 26,” officials said in the media release. “This information is not correct. Shelter staff euthanized 15 dogs yesterday — one for medical reasons and 14 due to aggression concerns.”
The current euthanasia list will continue with its March 1 deadline, city officials said.
And the 180-dog and 120-cat capacity limit will continue to maintain reasonable operational care by the city’s limited shelter staff, officials said.
Animal surrenders are still open only to residents within San Angelo city limits, officials said. The shelter accepts surrenders 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, except for approved city holidays.
San Angelo residents who want to surrender a found animal can bring the animal to the shelter, get in touch with other rescues for intake or join the Good Samaritan program by caring for the pet temporarily until placement is found, officials said.
“Please continue to advocate, share, foster and adopt shelter pets to help prevent euthanasia,” city officials said.
