GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – Gadsden city leaders are responding after video showed loose and roaming dogs killing cats in a neighborhood, running in groups, and scaring people.
Director of City Services Tena King says they take the complaints of neighbors living in Gadsden very seriously and it’s their job to provide solutions.
“Just because animal control doesn’t make contact with you doesn’t mean they did not come out,” said King.
Neighbors who live on Mary Street reportedly asked the city for help. Those neighbors shared video of loose dogs running in groups. One video shows dogs killing a cat.
“The way our animal control works is if you have an issue you would call animal control directly if it’s during work hours, and if it’s after work hours you would go through dispatch so, it wouldn’t come to me unless it escalated to serious issue,” said King.
King says with these cold temperatures there are certain things neighborhoods can do to help with animal control.
“Don’t put blankets out to keep them warm, I know that sounds inhumane but research actually shows that they will freeze, they can freeze because it can get damp and they’ll freeze in the dampness. Number two, please don’t put food out. If you put food out they’re going to come to eat,” said King.
King says fresh garbage left outside also attracts unwanted attention. She says Gadsden has animal issues like any other city and they’re working to solve the problem.
“Its got me to where I don’t want to come out because I can only go so far to be able to get back to safety so, I don’t want to come out knowing I could be attacked by a dog,” said Katherine Webb.
“Animal control does work at night, we have emergency numbers, they call dispatch and dispatch will call animal control they will go out to a situation. Also our police officers are very equipped to take care of a situation,” said King.
City leaders say animal control went door to door talking to neighbors on Mary Street Thursday.
