RIGHT NOW WE’RE STILL WAITING TO GET MORE CONFIRMATION ON EXACTLY HOW MANY ANIMALS WERE INVOLVED, HOW MANY ANIMALS WERE LOST IN THE FIRE. Choctaw animal rescue owner risks life to save several dogs from large fire
For now, the animal rescue is taking it one day at a time.
The owner of an animal shelter in Choctaw risked her life to save as many dogs as she could after a destructive fire broke out early Tuesday morning. | RELATED VIDEO ABOVE | Numerous dogs saved after large fire sparks at animal rescue in ChoctawThe fire was at Fur Ever Friends Animal Rescue in Choctaw near Henney Road and Reno Avenue. Sky 5 flew over the scene, showing large flames coming from multiple buildings at the animal rescue, including a storage barn that was destroyed. The animal rescue’s owner ran inside, letting the dogs loose one by one. “I had just hung up the phone with her at 6, and everything was fine. And then I get a phone call at 7 of her screaming and distraught that her barn was on fire,” said Kim West, a volunteer at the animal rescue and the owner’s best friend. “Diane saved a lot of animals at the risk of her own life, and that says a lot of her because they were not just dogs. These were not just animals. they were her pets, and she loved them dearly. All of those dogs have a name.” Some of the dogs did not make it out, and everything inside is a devastating loss to the animal rescue. “She’s lost everything in that barn. She’s lost the keys to her vehicle. She lost all the food for the animals, all the hay for the animals. She will need water,” West said. The community is stepping up to help as other rescued stopped by to take in dogs that were saved from the fire. Others are offering their business as a drop-off site for donations. “Dog food, leashes, collars, cat food, treats, heat blankets, pads, cleaning supplies,” West said. For now, the animal rescue is taking it one day at a time. “It’s not only a loss for Diane, it’s a loss for the whole community,” West said. “This is really devastating. It’s very, very emotional. It’s just hard.
