CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — A man has been charged after four dead dogs, along with four neglected dogs living in “filthy” kennels were found in Kanawha County, court records said.
Zackary Brandon, 25, of Charleston has been charged with four counts of depositing dead animals, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court. He is also facing four counts of animal cruelty.
The complaint said on May 19, a humane officer with the Charleston Police Department responded to an animal cruelty complaint at a Scraggs Drive address where a tote was found “omitting the scent of strong decay.”
Investigators reported finding four dead dogs inside the tote “in different states of decomposition” along with four living dogs inside a nearby garage without working utilities.
The living dogs were found “in unkempt kennels with filthy bedding and an excessive amount of fecal matter, and a strong scent of urine,” the complaint said.
Food and water bowls inside the garage were molded and only one dog had access to water, according to records.
Investigators said the animals were underweight with “excessively long nails and flea dirt on their bodies.”
Brandon was taken into custody on Friday and released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
