TAZEWELL COUNTY, Va. (WVVA) -The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors’ vice chairmen and northern district, Kyle Cruey, says one of the number one calls the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office gets is animal complaints, especially roaming dogs. However, looking to combat repeat offenders, they’ve introduced a simple change to their county animal ordinance.
Cruey says the current ordinance regarding dogs running at large has been in effect since the 1980s. However, they hope to make enforcement of the ordinance more effective in the courtroom, by redefining the word “permit.”
He says this redefinition, which has already passed its first reading, changes “permit” to mean owning a dog that is found to be running at large. He says this will allow officers to better enforce the ordinance in cases of dogs repeatedly running through the community, irrespective of their owner’s twisting of code vocabulary to deny giving their dogs permission to roam.
“I think it will be highly effective. We have an excellent… code enforcement and animal control here in Tazewell County, along with the animal shelter, and they do a lot of great work, and I think this is just going to help the tools they already have when it gets to court, but I think it’s going to be extremely effective,” says Cruey.
Cruey says the change in ordinance is scheduled to have its second reading at their next meeting: June 27th at 4:00pm
