The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced updates to the regulations governing the importation of dogs into the United States from countries with low or no dog rabies risk. These updates, which will take effect on August 1, 2024, at 12:00am ET, aim to safeguard U.S. communities and prevent the reintroduction of dog rabies.
The revised guidelines simplify the entry process for dogs arriving from dog rabies-free or low-risk countries, incorporating public and industry feedback, as well as input from various nations. A key feature of the update is the introduction of an online CDC Import Form, which must be completed on the day of travel. Travelers will need to present the receipt from this form, either printed or on a phone, as acceptable documentation to airlines and border officials. The receipt will be valid for six months from the date of issuance and will cover multiple entries.
Dogs must have resided solely in rabies-free or low-risk countries for at least six months prior to entry into the U.S. All dogs must be over six months of age and microchipped to be eligible for entry.
For dogs coming from high-risk countries, additional documentation and requirements remain in force. Travelers and industry professionals can find more information and stay updated by visiting the CDC’s dedicated portal at www.cdc.gov/dogtravel.
