The CDC has adjusted a new policy to bring dogs across the U.S. border, set to take effect next month. It comes after several public comments from travelers concerned about the amount of paperwork required to bring pets with them across the border. Under the previous policy change, the agency required any dog entering the country to be micro-chipped, at least six months old, and appear healthy. There was also a series of required paperwork to fill out before arrival. However, this week the CDC announced plans to “clarify and simplify” the process for anyone bringing dogs into the United States from rabies-free and low risk dog rabies countries. The change applies to anyone bringing a dog that has spent the past six months in a rabies-free or low-risk country. The CDC says if this applies to you, then you only need to complete the CDC Dog Import Form, which should take a few minutes and can be done on the day of travel. The receipt can also be shown to airlines and border officials as a printed copy or by phone. The receipt will be good for travel into the U.S. for six months from the date of issuance, including multiple entries. These updates incorporate the feedback received from the public, industry partners, and various countries on the dog importation rule. The new policy still takes effect on Aug. 1. Additional documents and requirements will still be in effect for dogs coming from high-risk countries. You can find more information and updates from the CDC here.
