Some of us might wonder whether firefighters really will rescue cats from trees, but we know for sure that firefighters in Pascoag will rescue dogs from a roof.
That’s what happened July 4th when a resident of Centennial Street called the Fire Department after seeing dogs wandering on the porch roof of the house across the street.
“Your PFD was recently called out to assist with five dogs stranded on a woof…er…roof!” the Pascoag Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “No two calls are ever the same, and we truly learn to ‘expect the unexpected.'”
The dogs – one adult, the rest puppies – apparently got onto the roof by pushing through the space between an air-conditioning unit and a window, said neighbor Liza Perlini.
After looking out from her house and seeing “several of the pups wandering around the roof,” Perlini tried contacting the homeowners but had no luck.
“We’re animal lovers,” she said. “We could not sit back and do nothing.”
The firefighters who responded to the call “were very patient and cautious,” Perlini said. “We armed them with a dog lead and treats to help coerce the pups back inside the window.”
The adult dog that fell off the roof amid the effort to get him back inside but “luckily had only suffered minor scrapes,” she said.
The rescue led to some excitement in the neighborhood. Perlini said, “My 4-year-old still talks about, ‘Remember when the dogs were on the roof?'”
