CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) — The Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA took in seven of the 81 dogs rescued from an alleged puppy mill in Free Union.
The good news, according to Luke Waldron, CASPCA director of marketing and communications, is that all seven have already been adopted into loving homes.
When CASPCA first brought in the dogs, they were in rough shape and needed significant care.
“We treated them for some dental issues, and they came from less-than-clean conditions. It was all about getting them back on their feet,” Waldron said.
Despite the heartbreaking condition the dogs were in, CASPCA knew they had to step up.
“It’s always heartbreaking to see animals — especially dogs that are so loving — living in hard conditions. But we’re just thankful we could help,” said Waldron.
CASPCA says they were able to provide care for the dogs thanks to donations to their medical fund.
“Our fund goes a long way to ensure we can immediately act during emergencies like this one,” said Waldron.
During this holiday season, CASPCA is reminding the community to “adopt, don’t shop.”
“If you’re looking to adopt a dog, and it may be from a breeder, make sure they’re ethical — not overbreeding and keeping the dogs in good conditions. But it’s always best to adopt a rescue animal because they’re so loving, and there are so many in need,” Waldron said.
As for the case, three individuals have been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. Each faces one felony count and 24 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.
