Case dropped against Mesa woman accused of torturing, killing dogs

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Mesa woman who was accused of torturing and killing multiple dogs and documenting the abuse in her diary won’t face charges in the case, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Prosecutors said they turned down the case against Brook Scalero because there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction.

Last November, investigators said her roommate turned over Scalero’s journal to the Mesa Police Department after her dog Gus died under Scalero’s watch.

Scalero claimed the dog had a tooth infection and later died.

Police say the diary had her name, address, email, and it had writings about how Scalero tortured 12 dogs and killed five, including Gus.

One of the abuses started on June 7 when Mesa-based animal rescue P.A.W.S. for the Cause told police Scalero got a 3-year-old Maltese mix named Pepe in May but never followed through on paying them.

On Oct. 5, police said a dog that matched the description of Pepe was found abused to death in an apartment complex dumpster.

The dog had a microchip, and his name was Giffin, not Pepe, but Scalero was listed as the registered owner, police said.

She was arrested on Nov. 14 for unrelated crimes.

Police say Scalero confirmed the journal belonged to her but said the stories “were just creative writings.” She also reportedly admitted to taking Pepe without paying the animal rescue.

A day after her arrest, police said someone found Pepe dead behind a bush along 8th Avenue near Extension Road in Mesa.

Scalero was interviewed again on Nov. 18, where she admitted torturing and killing Pepe, Griffin and Gus, police said.

MCAO said there wasn’t enough evidence beyond Scalero’s own statements to pursue the case.

She is facing “other unrelated charges,” prosecutors said, but they didn’t elaborate.
