On social networks, Gen Z seems to worship all the 2000s trends. Young users don’t hesitate to show themselves on TikTok in outfits reminiscent of this decade that was rich in fashion twists and turns. Over the past two years, we’ve witnessed the return of skinny jeans, popularised by It-girls, or the signature Juicy Couture peach-skin tracksuit worn by Paris Hilton.
In response to this new, nostalgic craze, designers and fashion houses are playing on this vintage phenomenon to offer collections adorned with y2k details. Brands have even gone as far as reissuing their iconic handbags to restore their prestige: Balenciaga has relaunched the City bag, seen on the arms of all the hottest girls of the 2000s, including Nicole Richie; Chloé has just relaunched its Paddington bag, first designed in 2004 by Phoebe Philo and quickly adored by the stars of the time, such as Kate Moss; while Louis Vuitton’s Speedy bag has been reimagined under the creative direction of Pharrell Williams.
The fashion world is taking it a step further this season, with some houses reimagining the way girls in the 2000s wore their handbags. Notably, Chemena Kamali for Chloé and Miuccia Prada for Miu Miu are leading the way. The models, exuding confidence and a rebellious attitude, carry their bags in the crook of their arm, just as Sienna Miller, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie wore their City bags by Balenciaga in 2003. We also think of Serena Van Der Woodsen in GossipGirl.
