A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued four people and three dogs from a boat stranded in the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.
Noumea’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre notified Carnival Splendor about a distress call from a catamaran while the ship was traveling south of New Caledonia on Thursday, according to a news release. The ship departed from Sydney, Australia on May 19 for an eight-day South Pacific cruise.
“The Carnival Cruise Line ship immediately headed towards the location and was able to reach the vessel five hours later to complete the rescue,” the company said. “The two couples and their three dogs were safely welcomed onto Carnival Splendor and are receiving food, water and medical assistance.”
Carnival did not specify who the stranded passengers were. Noumea’s MRCC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Carnival Splendor will visit Vanuatu’s Mystery Island on Friday, followed by Noumea on Saturday, before heading back to Sydney.
The news comes after one of the cruise line’s other ships, Carnival Paradise, rescued five people from a small boat in distress south of Cabo San Antonio, Cuba last week.
