Carmichael woman accused of injuring dog, leaving it for dead in garbage bin

A Carmichael woman was released from police custody after allegedly cutting a dog’s throat and dumping it in a trash bin, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said.Deputies responded to an apartment complex on Manzanita Avenue around 9 p.m. Wednesday after a caller found a dog in a trash can with something tied around its neck. The dog was still alive.The sheriff’s office said detectives learned that the dog’s owner, 41-year-old Danielle Killian, lived at the apartment complex with another dog and a cat. “She felt her life would be easier if she only had to care for one dog,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Officials said Killian cut the dog with a knife on Monday. Then while it was still alive on Tuesday, she placed it in a shopping bag and disposed of it in the garbage bin at the apartment complex. Animal control took the injured dog for medical treatment, the sheriff’s office said. They also took custody of the other dog in Killian’s care, but could not find the cat.Killian was arrested and taken to the Sacramento County Main Jail. She was later released on her own recognizance by the courts and is out of jail. The sheriff’s office said it fears she may have cared for other animals in the past that may have suffered abuse. They noted she told detectives she moved around regularly.
