ST. LOUIS (First Alert 4) — The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office refused charges against a 54-year-old man related to a dog attacking a woman on January 16.
Gladys Anthony, 62, and her husband were mauled by three dogs in their backyard in the Walnut Park West neighborhood. Anthony died from her injuries.
The dogs escaped from a home up the street through a hole in the owner’s fence, according to SLMPD. Detectives arrested a man Wednesday and presented charges to prosecutors. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office declined to charge the man.
The three dogs were euthanized after an investigation by the city’s animal control department.
SLMPD Director of Public Affairs and Information Mitch McCoy released the following statement:
“The death of Gladys Anthony is a complete tragedy and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department detectives worked with the Circuit Attorney’s Office to carefully review the facts of the case. If any new evidence comes to light, SLMPD will review it and notify the Circuit Attorney’s Office.”
Christine Bertelson, spokesperson for the circuit attorney’s office, said the office does not comment on why charges are refused after reviewing a warrant application.
“In every case, we conduct a thorough analysis of the facts and the law to determine what, if any, charges should be filed,” she said in an email.
Bertleson said any new information received would be considered.
