No matter where you live, you can find dozens–if not hundreds–of adoptable dogs in rescues and shelters near you. From owner surrenders to stray intakes, each shelter dog has a story worth telling. Plus, one of those dogs is your perfect match!
Even though Zion, the resilient Canaan Dog, has been given up three times in his short life, he’s just as hopeful and friendly as can be. In fact, he’s an outgoing, athletic boy who’s taken a liking to hockey in particular! After meeting NHL player Sam Bennett, Zion is even more determined to find a home where he can cheer on the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup finals. Could Zion be your MVP?
What a handsome guy! Zion’s soulful eyes and inquisitive facial expressions could charm just about anyone, and it’s no surprise that he won the friendship of Florida Panthers’ forward Sam Bennett. In fact, Bennett and his wife Zoe have even offered to cover his adoption fees! This is a paw-fect way to celebrate the Panthers’ position in the Stanley Cup Finals, though I’m sure @humanebroward will be throwing a party for the shelter pups if the Panthers can pull off a win. They certainly deserve it, though they’d love nothing more in the world than to score their forever homes!

Zion is especially deserving of a loving and devoted home after being given up on three times–none of which were his fault. He was first let down when he was just a pup and began displaying normal puppy behaviors. His first owners realized they did not want to deal with crying, biting, and ‘puppy destruction.’ Sadly, his second owner also gave him up after complaining that he ‘barked too much.’ What they didn’t say was that he was left outside 24 hours a day! It’s no wonder why his life was off to such a rough start.
Canaan Dogs Have Unique Needs
While many young dogs and puppies experience destructive and noisy phases of adolescence, Zion’s need for stimulation, company, and exercise is even greater. That’s because he’s a Canaan Dog! This ancient dog breed does best when they have a job to do and a person (or a pack) to bond with. These dogs don’t do well when simply left to their own devices for long periods of time, but they will be your best friend if you give them plenty of chances to run, play, and bond with you.
Zion is a happy and affectionate dog who will even give kisses to friends he knows. He adores play dates and car rides, though nothing would make him happier than a family to watch Florida Panthers games with. If you’re in Florida, consider visiting him at the Humane Society of Broward County!
