When it comes to packing up the family for a day at the beach, it might be tempting to take Fido along.
But there are several important things to consider before you take a dog to any of the area beaches. Here are four things to know about dogs on area beaches.
Is my dog allowed on the beach?
While most Wilmington area beaches permit dogs, the times may vary depending on the time of day or season. For example, Carolina Beach allows dogs on the beach any time from Oct. 1 to March 31. From April 1 to Sept. 30, dogs are only permitted on the beach before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Kure Beach has similar regulations with dogs prohibited from being on the beach strand from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1 through Sept. 30, and Wrightsville Beach does not allow pets on the beach strand from April 1 to Sept. 30.
Several of Brunswick County’s beaches are dog-friendly, including Oak Island, which permits dogs any time of day. Because regulations vary, it’s important to check the town’s ordinance, usually posted on the town’s website, or call town hall before you visit.

Can I let my dog off the leash?
Most towns require dogs to be leashed at all times. However, some areas do permit unleashed pets during the off-season if they are under voice control of the owner and the owner is nearby.
What about … poop?
All towns require owners to clean up after their pets and dispose of the waste. Some beaches have pet waste bag dispensers along the strand, but pet owners should still pack their own.

What else should I know?
It’s important to remember that like humans, dogs can also suffer heat stroke. When it’s hot outside, it may be best to leave Fido at home. Should you take your dog to the beach, make sure he or she has plenty of water and shade.
