Cinnamon is a great way to add flavor to your meals, whether you’re adding it to a pie or stew. The ingredient is versatile and can be used for cooking or medicinal purposes. It’s packed with antioxidants and is an anti-inflammatory, according to Heathline.

Cinnamon is healthy for humans, but what about for animals? It can be overwhelming to keep track of what is toxic to your dog. But some human foods may actually used in your pet’s favorite chow and treats.

Can dogs have cinnamon?

Dogs can eat cinnamon, according to the American Kennel Club. Some dog treats even contain cinnamon, PetMD reports.

However, be mindful when feeding your pet the spice. Small amounts of cinnamon aren’t bad for your pup, but consuming larger doses could cause some issues, Hill’s Pet Nutrition reports.

Is cinnamon toxic to dogs?

Cinnamon is not toxic to dogs, according to the ASPCA. But that doesn’t mean your pet should be eating it frequently.

If your dog inhales cinnamon powder, it could lead to choking, coughing and difficulty breathing, PetMD reports. Chewing on cinnamon sticks can also cause skin and mouth irritation.

Consuming large quantities of cinnamon may also cause your dog to have low blood sugar or liver disease, and could lead to vomiting, diarrhea and changes in heart rate, the Pet Poison Helpline warns.

While the spice itself is non-toxic, cinnamon oil can be toxic to dogs, according to the American Kennel Club. “Just a small drop of cinnamon essential oil can lead to serious toxicity,” PetMD reports.

How much cinnamon can I give my dog?

Dogs should never consume more than one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, according the Pet Poison Helpline. Any amount greater can cause problems for your pet.
