Some people love including their dogs in family meals, but before you pass the pasta, there are some important things to consider. Can dogs eat plain pasta? What about pasta sauce? And how much is too much? To help answer these questions, veterinary expert Dr. Shalsee Vigeant shares insights on what’s safe for your pup and what’s best left on your plate. Let’s dig in to find out if pasta night can be dog-friendly!
Can dogs eat pasta?
In moderation, yes, dogs can eat plain pasta. “Most dogs tolerate plain pasta well, as it’s primarily made from wheat, eggs, and water, which are generally safe for dogs,” says Dr. Vigeant, a veterinary medical director at VEG. However, the key word here is “plain.” Pasta seasoned with garlic, onion, or spices is off-limits, as these ingredients can be toxic to dogs. “While a small amount of plain pasta isn’t harmful, it’s best given as an occasional treat rather than a staple in your dog’s diet,” Dr. Vigeant says.
Can dogs eat pasta sauce?
Pasta sauce is where things get dicey. Most sauces contain garlic, onions, salt, and other spices that aren’t safe for dogs. Dr. Vigeant notes, “Garlic and onions contain a compound called alium, which is toxic to dogs and can lead to symptoms like vomiting and even red blood cell damage.” Besides potential toxins, pasta sauces can also be high in sugar and sodium, which aren’t healthy for your dog. If you’re considering sharing pasta, skip the sauce altogether, and serve it plain.
How much pasta is too much for dogs?
A few bites of plain pasta are unlikely to cause harm, but larger portions can lead to digestive upset or weight gain. Dogs don’t digest carbs like we do, so too much pasta can lead to bloating, gas, or even pancreatitis in some cases. Dr. Vigeant suggests, “A few noodles as an occasional treat is fine, but be mindful of portion size—especially with smaller dogs, who can be more sensitive to excess carbs.” If you’re using pasta as a treat, keep it under a tablespoon for small dogs and no more than 1/4 cup for larger breeds.
Does pasta have any health benefits for dogs?
Pasta doesn’t offer much in the way of health benefits for dogs. While it’s a source of carbohydrates, dogs don’t actually need these carbs to thrive. Their primary dietary needs center around proteins and fats. Dr. Vigeant explains, “Dogs are omnivores, but they get most of their energy and nutrients from animal proteins and fats, not carbs.” While pasta isn’t harmful in small amounts, it’s not exactly a superfood for dogs either. If you’re looking for nutrient-dense treats, consider options like lean meats, veggies, or dog-safe fruits instead of carbs.
In short, while dogs can enjoy a bit of plain pasta now and then, it’s best to keep it as an occasional treat and skip the sauce. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian for guidance on your dog’s diet and safe treat options!
